Will residential development be hindered by rising sea levels?

Many of our South Florida readers probably take advantage of the fact that they live within minutes of some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. But is the proximity of the ocean going to cause a problem for residential property in the local area sooner rather than later? According to a recent report, the answer may just be “Yes.”

The report detailed some of the findings of the Miami-Dade Sea Level Rise Task Force, as well as a lot of other data that indicates that perhaps the rise in sea levels is a more pressing concern for residents of South Florida than it is for people in other locations in the country. For example, the report pointed to data from the United States Geological Survey that a sea level rise of approximately two feet could occur within the next 45 years or so, which would obviously be a major problem.

The good news, however, is that the local task force that was analyzing this type of data has come out with several recommendations in the face of what could become a major crisis. The recommendations are intended to help the state and local governments begin to prepare for the potential damage that could be the result from a rise in sea level.

For the time being though, concerns about rising sea levels do not seem to be deterring builders that have been focused heavily on residential development in South Florida. This recent report, however, may change a few minds and get builders thinking about how to construct buildings that are prepared to withstand any of the negative occurrences that could be associated with a rise in sea levels.
